Group Selection Policy
Rationale: The Langwarrin Preschool Committee of Management has found it necessary to formulate the following policy for the selection process when placing children into Preschool groups and throughout the year when vacancies arise. The objective of the Preschool is to ensure that the kindergarten groups are selected to provide the best combination of students for educational purposes, whist also trying to accommodate the needs and wishes of individual families.
Principles:
- Eligibility for enrolment at the Preschool is based on Frankston City Council’s Central Preschool Register Policy.
- Langwarrin Preschool upholds the philosophy of offering a high standard Preschool education to all eligible children on an equal basis.
Confirmation Process:
- Each family offered a position at the Preschool will be required to confirm their child’s position in their Letter of Offer by clicking on the provided electronic link. To secure their child’s position at the Preschool you must submit the following electronically:
- Pay a deposit (if applicable) or provide a copy of a valid Health Care/Pension card to secure their position.
- Provide proof of birth date in the form of the enrolling child’s Birth Certificate.
- Provide proof of residence e.g. rates or utilities notice etc.
- Group Preferences will be taken at this stage and whilst completing your child’s confirmation secures a position at Langwarrin Preschool, your child’s group remains in a ‘waitlisted’ status while we complete group selections.
- All preferences and reasons for group selection must be in writing to be considered by the Leadership Team, in consultation with teaching staff.
- Children who are repeating a second year of 4-year-old Preschool are still required to return requested documents and submit a group preference form.
Group Allocation Guidelines
- Group Preference Forms will be submitted online via the Enrol Now confirmation link provided to you in your letter of offer. The leadership team, in consultation with teachers, will determine group placements based on (and in no particular order):
- Advice from our 3 Year Old Teachers
- Friendship groups
- Parent work commitments
- Additional needs
- Any additional information provided by parents/guardians based on educational grounds
- Early Start Kinder (ESK) children
- The needs of children repeating 4-year-old Kinder
- Every effort will be made to place children according to parental requests however in some cases this may not be possible.
- Parents will be notified of their child’s group allocation via email following an extensive selection process. We anticipate this will occur no later than August 31st. Group placements are not confirmed until final submissions of required paperwork and/or deposits have been received.
- An internal waiting list will be available to parents if their first preference is not available. If required paperwork is not submitted by the required dates then a child may lose their position in that particular group at the Preschool and that position may be allocated to another child whose parent has placed their name on the internal waiting list for that group.
- Under the circumstances where we have a number of children enrolled with additional needs, such as physical, intellectual or medical disabilities, it is preferable (but not absolute) that they are evenly placed throughout the groups to ensure that the teaching staff have enough time and resources to provide the best education program for all children within the group. Depending on each individual circumstance, these children may be given priority with group allocation. Whether a child is given priority in group allocation will be the mutual decision of the Leadership Team based on confidential information obtained from the family and other assessments. Children with additional needs requiring an additional assistant are given priority in group selection.
- The Leadership Team at Langwarrin Preschool will have complete autonomy over the placement of children and all decisions will be final.
- Group allocation will aim to be concluded by August 31st in the year preceding the child’s kindergarten year. The exception to this is the placement of children with additional needs where allocation may need to occur earlier to allow for organisation of funding/aide requirements.
Group Selection Guidelines for Vacancies Following Group Allocation.
As vacancies arise throughout the year, or after group allocation has occurred, allocation shall be as follows: places will be offered to children on internal waiting lists, and then when internal waiting lists are exhausted, places will be offered to the next child on the Frankston Council’s enrolment list, as advised by council.
